eversafeLiz Loewy, the Merion native who became famous after convicting the son of socialite and philanthropist Brooke Astor for financial abuse of elders, will continue to fight the good fight at EverSafe, the company that helps prevent financial crimes against seniors, writes Erin Arvedlund for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The start-up firm is the new home of the Penn graduate and former attorney with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. It uses computer algorithms to monitor bank accounts, brokerage statements, and cash withdrawals belonging to the elderly.

“Elder abuse can be completely changed for the better through technology,” said Loewy.

Loewy joins EverSafe after nearly three decades of fighting elder abuse, a crime she believes will one day be recognized by society as equal to domestic violence.

Working for Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau was a defining moment in Loewy’s life. She stayed with the D.A.’s office for 29 years, and founded one of the first units for anti-elder abuse nationwide.

Loewy was recruited as counsel by EverSafe’s founder, Howard Tischler, who started the company after his own mother was scammed. EverSafe offers up to 70 alerts across various institutions, including bank and investment accounts. It also monitors credit reports to isolate cases of identity theft.

“Elder abuse falls into two buckets: The first is unfair, deceptive, and abusive acts, and the second is elder financial exploitation,” she said.
