Bryn Mawr’s Leonard Barrack, the successful plaintiff class action lawyer, along with his wife Lynne, have made a generous donation of $5 million to Temple University, writes Jeff Blumenthal for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Temple will use the money to establish the Barrack Scholars in Law, a five-year scholarship initiative under development by the university’s Law Dean, JoAnne Epps.

Both Barracks are Temple alums. Leonard earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 1965 and a law degree in 1968, while Lynne earned her Bachelor’s Degree in 1968.

Back in 2008, the family’s largesse enabled Leonard’s high school alma mater, Akiba Hebrew Academy, to relocate from its cramped quarters in Bala Cynwyd to its now-sprawling campus in Bryn Mawr. As a result of the Barracks’ multimillion-dollar donation, the school renamed itself the Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy in honor of Leonard’s brother who died in a plane crash in 1960.

Leonard, 73, has served on Temple’s board of trustees for the past 15 years. He founded Barrack, Rodos & Bacine, the Center City law firm perhaps best known for its successful $6.13 billion class-action lawsuit against WorldCom.

“We are grateful for this gift and look forward to welcoming the first cohort of Barrack Scholars to join Temple Law in the 2016–2017 academic year,” said Epps. “The generosity of the Barracks never ceases to amaze me.”
