Happiness seems to be more contagious in Montgomery County than it is in most places throughout America.

According to a new study by SmartAsset, a personal finance technology company that uses financial modeling to power advice on major financial decisions, Montgomery County is one of the Top 25 Happiest Counties in the nation, 23rd to be exact.

To get its ranking, SmartAsset used a population filter, looking only at counties with populations of 50,000 or more. From there, it considered eight factors, some positive and some negative.

Montgomery County received an elite ranking based on the presence of a high marriage rate (54.3 percent), ratio of median income to cost of living, life expectancy (80.2 years), and rate of physical activity.

What also aided Montco was the relative absence of poverty (6.4 percent), unemployment (3.9 percent), personal bankruptcy (0.15 percent), and divorce.

Some other key findings include:

  • The United States ranked 13th in a recent World Happiness Report that looked at 156 countries. Denmark was first.
  • Seven out of the ten happiest counties are on the East Coast. Only one Western county made the cut, and the rest were in the Midwest.
  • Population size doesn’t matter much.
  • Marriage rate matters greatly. All of the counties in the Top 25 had marriage rates over 50 percent (the approximate average marriage rate in the U.S.).
  • New Jersey gets a bad rap. Not one or two, but three New Jersey counties made the Top 10.
