Data, Operational Issues Put KOP-Based Agora Cyber Charter School on Radar of Department of Education
Agora Cyber Charter School could be facing serious consequences from the Pennsylvania Department of Education if it does not provide accurate data on student testing and attendance, writes Martha Woodall for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The state’s second-largest online charter has been given until May 27 to comply with the request, or the department will take appropriate action against the school.
King of Prussia-based Agora has been trying since October 2014 to get a five-year renewal of its operating agreement with PDE. However, according to a letter sent to the school by David Volkman, the department’s Executive Deputy Secretary, the data Agora provided had serious quality issues and was symptomatic of school’s ongoing operational issues.
The issues surround concerns that bills submitted by Agora to school districts are not accurate as it could be billing for students who are no longer enrolled and that students may not be receiving the education they are entitled to.
Volkman ordered the school to provide accurate results of state testing and 11th-grade academic data, and to review data previously sent to the PDE for “accuracy and integrity.”
“We are currently working on the data requested,” Joann Gigliotti, an Agora spokeswoman, wrote in an e-mail to the Inquirer. “We feel confident that we will be able to deliver what the department is requesting by their deadline.”
