German grocery store chain, Lidl, is pulling back on expansion plans into the United States, but the proposed location at the intersection of Ridge Pike and Trooper Road in Lower Providence is still a go.

“We just received a full revised set of traffic plans for the intersection that they had submitted to PennDOT,” said Don Delemater, township manager. “We heard the rumors, too. It’s all over Facebook and other outlets that they’re pulling out, but that’s not true for us. We’d appreciate you getting the word out that they’re moving forward here.”

Dunkin Donuts has an approved plan for the south west corner of that same intersection, Delemater said. The entire intersection will be widened and new traffic signals will be put in.

Calling the expansion into the U.S. grocery market “a single disaster” in an interview with Manager Magazine, a German publication, CEO Klaus Gehrig said the company is reconsidering the aggressive expansion the discount grocer began rolling out during the last two years, writes Natalie Kostelni for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Lidl has more than 10,000 stores in 27 countries across Europe. As part of its expansion into the United States, Lidl planted its U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Va., two years ago and had plans to open upwards of 100 stores in the eastern part of the country by the end of 2018. It now appears the grocer will reconsider the number of locations it will open as well as explore revamping the prototype store it designed for the U.S. market.
