Ten students from Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts are foregoing the typical college spring break sun and sand vacation for a service learning trip to Horsham, PA. They are here to help Habitat MontDelco ready its new Horsham ReStore for a grand opening on March 17. This is the eleventh year of a partnership between Assumption College and the Habitat affiliate, according to a submitted press release.

“The ReStore concept is one I never knew about before,” says Maria Cafferty. “The fact that items are repurposed and the money goes directly back into the community is great. I also never realized all that goes into opening a retail location. The next time I’m out shopping, I’m going to appreciate that.”

Habitat MontDelco’s newest discount home improvement store opens its doors at 9:30 am on Saturday, March 17 with great deals for everyone looking for savings on home-renovation projects. Shoppers will find everything from furniture to cabinets and vanities, to construction materials, appliances and lighting at a fraction of retail prices. The new 22,000 square foot store is located at 200 Blair Mill Road in Horsham.

“I’m here to give back. It’s rewarding because the people are so nice and it’s really interesting learning about Habitat,” says Jordan Edouard. “There are definitely misperceptions. A lot of people think that the organization gives houses away. But homeowners have to put in sweat equity and take financial literacy classes and buy their houses.”

Adds Maia Campbell, “I never used a saw, and didn’t know how to use a power drill. It’s awesome gaining new skills while helping the community.”

The Horsham ReStore is chock full of new and gently-used appliances, building materials, cabinets, doors, flooring, furniture, hardware, housewares, lighting, plumbing, tools and windows. It’s an ideal shopping spot for homeowners, renters, college students, do-it-yourselfers, contractors, interior designers, landlords, treasure hunters and environmentalists. The store is open from 9 am to 7 pm Tuesday through Sunday and all proceeds support Habitat’s mission to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

“Every ReStore purchase creates the opportunity for a better life,” said Habitat MontDelco Chief Executive Officer Marianne Lynch. “All sales help Habitat construct homes for affordable homeownership, provide critical repairs, revitalize neighborhoods, and support financial literacy classes for community members.

“The ReStore keeps perfectly-good items out of local landfills—for the Horsham store we estimate 1,560,000 pounds in the first year alone. In addition, the store contributes to the local economy by providing as many as 10 well paying jobs in its first year. Preparing for its opening has also required use of local contractors and other services that stimulate the economy as well.”

During the Grand Opening on March 17, Habitat will offer free gifts for the first 150 shoppers, and there will be giveaways throughout the day until 7 pm and on Sunday, March 18 from 9 am to 7 pm. Visit www.RestoreHorsham.org for more information.

Donations are welcome. They can be made in person or for larger items, a free pickup can be scheduled. Call 610-631-3149 or email donations@restoremontdelco.org.

This is Habitat MontDelco’s second ReStore in Montgomery County. The first, located at 533 Foundry Road in West Norriton, remains open. Hours for this store are Wednesday from 7 am to 5 pm, Thursday and Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to 7 pm.
