Merion Station's David Rubin stands as a beacon in the realm of landscape architecture, urban design, and planning.

David Rubin, the founding principal of David Rubin Land Collective, stands as a beacon in the realm of landscape architecture, urban design, and planning, writes Suzi Nash for Philadelphia Gay News.

He was recently honored with the Garden Club of America’s highest award, celebrating his career dedicated to revitalizing the fabric of cities and communities. Rubin’s interests offer a glimpse into his passion and empathy. Collecting antique and rare garden tools is not just a hobby for him; it’s a journey through history.

He’s able to connect with the individuals who have also wielded these vintage tools, some of which are emblazoned with the names of the owners.

Rubin’s upbringing in Merion Station instilled in him a sense of resilience and creativity. His childhood sanctuary, his parents’ backyard, became a canvas for him to navigate the challenges he faced, both personally and socially, especially with his sexuality.

Today, Rubin continues to champion spaces that foster dialogue and connection to the world. Projects like Franklin Park in Washington, D.C., exemplify his mission to create accessible and welcoming environments for all.

“It is important that the places that Land Collective creates are loved by the citizens that occupy those spaces or they will eventually be erased,” he said. “Even when we’re designing in nature where there will be less human engagement, human beings still need to appreciate and love it or it too will be erased.”
