A group of South Jersey friends who began posting viral videos during the pandemic have turned their content creation into a full-time gig with the Pottstown Scout team, writes Matt Breen for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
After filming themselves hitting tennis balls into yards and challenging kids to tackle them for $100, they tried pretending one was a college scout at a Little League game. However they needed a school to represent.
“I had a hat with the letter P on it, so we needed a place with the letter P,” said Rob Schweitzer. “I happened to play a bunch of baseball tournaments in Pottstown, so I blurted it out.”
That same afternoon, they showed up at a Cherry Hill ball field claiming to scout talent for a made-up Pottstown University. Parents believed them, and their TikTok went viral in July 2020.
Their videos grew so popular that they created a real baseball team, the Pottstown Scout, assembling elite youth players nationwide for weekend tournaments while making viral videos of the competition.
“We look at it as probably the most viral travel baseball team ever,” said Adam Yu.
