Sign Code Typo Cost Wayne Business Owner David Mackey Thousands

Philadelphia Print Shop owner David Mackey got more than he bargained for when he relocated his shop.

When David Mackey moved the Philadelphia Print Shop to the former Antiquities Etc. on Lancaster Avenue in Wayne, he took his sign with him, writes Richard Ilgenfritz for Main Line Times & Suburban.

It had hung over his business at two previous Wayne locations and was smaller than the sign that had hung at the Antiquities store for 22 years.

Thanks to a reinterpreted typo in the zoning code, his sign was now too big.

Everyone liked the sign, but Mackey still had to meet with the Radnor Design Review Board, the Radnor Zoning Hearing Board, and the Radnor Township Board of Commissioners for final approval.

It cost him nearly $7,000.

A zoning board appearance fee of $900 was waived, but Mackey still ended up with $6,000 in legal fees and $900 for a certified site plan.

“Now I’ve got a glorious gallery down the road, prominent with signage, parking, and it’s next to At The Table. And now I have a $7,000 bill,” Mackey told the commissioners in January.

Ironically, at that same meeting, commissioners were scheduled to fix the wording in the zoning code, nullifying the typo that caused the trouble in the first place.
