Tucked in the woodlands of Chester County, Camphill Soltane — a Glenmoore-based nonprofit that provides an inclusive, supportive environment for individuals with intellectual differences, as well as the broader community — quietly hums with creative energy. Its art studio, Soltane Arts, is a space where weaving, sewing, knitting, pottery, and mosaics become tools of empowerment, connection, and discovery.
Soltane Arts operates as one of Camphill Soltane’s three social enterprises (Soltane Café and Soltane Horticulture are the other two) that offer vocational and creative opportunities for adults with intellectual differences. Through this space, community members are invited into classes and studios that teach traditional crafts — the rhythmic click of a loom, the soft yield of clay, the delicate tessellation of a mosaic.
Families and visitors often remark about how Soltane Arts “nurtures the whole person” and fosters not just artistic growth but social engagement, self-esteem, and everyday independence. The inclusive environment encourages people to explore, make mistakes, and find their own voice in the process. And that makes Soltane Arts integral to Camphill Soltane’s ethos of purposeful, inclusive community life.
As learners advance, some move on to craft products for sale. These products — textiles, ceramics, and mosaic art that are showcased on Soltane’s website — represent lived stories, personal breakthroughs, and collective creativity from people with and without intellectual disabilities.
On Friday, Oct. 10, Soltane Arts will step out of its studio walls and into the Camphill Soltane greenhouse garden with a pop-up artisan market during Camphill Soltane’s “Autumn Under the Glass” fundraiser from 5-9 PM.
The event transforms Soltane’s greenhouse and grounds into a glowing fall festival, where guests will mingle under string lights, enjoy food and drinks, listen to live music, shop the Soltane Arts artisan market, enjoy fire spinning and yard games, and relax by fire pits.
Amidst it all, the artisan market will showcase handcrafted works by artists from Soltane Arts and will thus serve as a bridge between studio and community. Proceeds from the fundraiser will support Soltane’s creative courses, employment opportunities, and social engagement programming for adults with intellectual differences.
Space is limited. Tickets can be purchased online at Camphill Soltane.
