Woori Center, a nonprofit organization situated in the heart of Lansdale, serves Koreans and other Asian Americans in the region, working together to achieve social, racial, and economic justice, writes Tim Jimenez for KYW Newsradio.

“Woori in Korean means ‘we’ and ‘us,’ and this name reflects unity in our collective work to uplift the entire community,” said Mel Lee, Woori Center’s executive director.

The organization was founded five years ago with a main focus on immigrant rights. The Woori Center is also involved in civic engagement, ensuring that Asian Americans participate in the democratic process.

Lee has heard countless times the same story: people who have been in the United States for five decades, but they are now finally voting for the first time.

“When we talk about voter registration, oftentimes people ask, ‘What is that?’ because nobody explained that they need to register to vote in this country,” she said.

South Korea does not have voter registration.

The center also looks to build tomorrow’s leaders. It provides a space for high school and college students where they can talk about and process their Asian American identities.
