The oat milk craze has Montgomery County coffee shops adjusting their menus, and Gen Z is driving the trend. The New York Times reported that Gen Z bought 20 percent less dairy milk over the past year, as cited by Erin McCarthy in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Wake Coffee Roasters co-owner Alec Satterly has noticed the boom. Satterly tells the Inquirer that the demand for oat milk has tripled in the store’s Ambler and Flourtown locations since the beginning of the pandemic.

“A lot of it is TikTok trends, especially in the younger demographic,” he said.

Wake Coffee Roaster phased out its almond milk, since there was very little demand.

Since Gen Z has entered the workforce, this fad seems to be here to stay; however, oat milk comes with a heftier price tag.

It is also not the only alternative milk option. Some local cafés incorporate sesame, pistachio, and macadamia milks into their menus.
