Cheyney University has launched a Workforce Enhancement Network in Cybersecurity program to provide students with mentorship and on-the-job training in one of the fastest-growing professions, writes Chanel Hill for The Philadelphia Tribune.

Twenty-five adults will be taught how to protect systems, networks, and programs from virtual attacks.

“We’ve been thinking about continuing education along this line for quite a while, and being able to pursue the funding opportunity, especially in the area of cybersecurity, has been at the forefront,” said Kizzy Morris, Cheyney University’s provost and chief academic officer.

The program, which started this semester, was established through a partnership with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, PSECU (the state’s largest credit union), AT&T, and others. The aim is that those who successfully complete the program will have job opportunities.

Cybersecurity is among the fastest-growing fields in the country, as jobs in the industry are expected to grow 33 percent between 2020 and 2030.

“We want to help reduce and eliminate disparity in representation in this professional sector while addressing the needs of cybersecurity,” said Morris.
