The Blue Bell PNC Bank at 480 Norristown Road is one of two branches in Pennsylvania slated to close its doors, writes Patty Tascarella for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

In addition to the Pennsylvania branch closures, PNC Bank is closing another 16 branches across several other states, including New Jersey, Florida, Maryland, and several others.

In September 2020, CEO of PNC Bill Demchak said that the company had doubled 2020 consolidations to 160 and they expected to close 120 in 2021 since customer preferences for digital banking transactions had gone up tremendously during the pandemic.

However, PNC hasn’t talked about their numbers during 2021 at all. But during the Goldman Sachs U.S. Financial Institutions Conference this month, Demchak continued to stress the importance of brick-and-mortar locations.

“The branch traffic continues to come down,” Demchak said, “but when people go into a branch, that interaction is much more valuable than ‘I’m going to cash a check.’”

Despite Demchak’s words, PNC locations have continued to close.

“There are more ways to bank with PNC than ever before, and we have continued to see our customers taking advantage of the investments we have made in non-branch channels by altering the ways in which they use brick-and-mortar locations,” said Jason Beyersdorfer, a PNC spokesman. “Shifts in the way customers are conducting their banking transactions are important inputs that inform our branch consolidation decisions.”

The closures – including the Blue Bell 480 Norristown Road closure – will occur on March 18th.
