Candace Bushnell, writer-producer behind Sex in the City, is appearing in a one-woman show this summer at the Bucks County Playhouse, reports Peter Crimmins for WHYY. 

The performance will chronicle Bushnell’s career from fledgling writer in New York to pop-culture touchstone. The Sex in the City franchise comprises novel, a TV show, two films and now a theatrical presentation. 

The Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope presentation isn’t a stage version of the book. Rather, it’s the story behind the book. Bushnell will describe the personal experiences that informed her writing of the source novel. 

 “It’s a different experience, and for some strange reason I don’t feel uncomfortable doing it,” she said. “Probably a little too comfortable. I would do a lot more but (director) Lorin Latarro is always telling me to dial it back. 

“I mean, don’t mind making a fool out of myself, but my director does.” 

Latarro, who previously directed “Mrs. Doubtfire” on Broadway, is the artistic associate at the Bucks County Playhouse and has directed and choreographed 10 shows at the Playhouse since it reopened in 2012. 

“I love Bucks County Playhouse. This is an artistic home for me,” Latarro said. “There’s something about this space that makes us make bold choices and big risks. The audiences that come here, they’re generous and smart. I think it’s the perfect place to start this show.” 

This presentation of “Is There Still Sex in the City?” is a workshop production. During its June 22 to July 18 run, it will be revised and fine-tuned.
