Sandeep ‘Sonny’ Singh Bains began his career taking care of people when he was just eight years old, on the Bains Family Farm in Fresno, California, where he worked until he went off to college. He now is the Principal at Bains Rx, LLC – Healthcare Consulting, a healthcare consulting firm.

At the University of the Pacific – Thomas J Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Stockton, CA, Sonny received his Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD). He then completed his residency at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia. He is Board-Certified in Pharmacotherapy and a Diplomat of the Pharmacy Leadership Academy (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists).

How did Sonny find his way from the West Coast to the East Coast? “My wife grew up in Montgomery County – this is what brought us here. While my heart will forever belong in my hometown of Fresno, CA, I’ve developed a love for the natural beauty of Montgomery County, PA – the lush green foliage in the Spring, the quiet snowy winters,” he says.

There are so many individuals and experiences that shape a man – both positive and negative, Sonny points out.  “My parents always taught me that there is a learning opportunity in every experience.  In addition to my family, the team at Abington Memorial Hospital has had the greatest impact on my career. I was quickly entrusted in leadership roles at Abington shortly after completing residency and afforded many learning opportunities – clinically and professionally,” Sonny explains. “Some colleagues and experiences taught me about navigating bureaucracy and others taught me how to engage with others on the healthcare team.”

“One friend and mentor I’m forever grateful for is Dr. John Russell, MD.  Dr. Russell has a unique leadership style and sincerely cares for you as a person,” he notes. “He mentored me through the good times and bad, always gave me candid feedback, no matter how tough it was to hear, but most importantly, taught me about the importance of how we make others feel which I have carried over into my everyday life and work.”

During his tenure at Abington Memorial Hospital (Abington – Jefferson Health), Sandeep ‘Sonny’ Singh Bains had the privilege of working with many great individuals and leading countless initiatives. “One of my proudest accomplishments was the establishment of the Pharmacist-lead Population Health Division,” he says.

They improved patient lives while reducing the cost of care. “The program seed was initially planted in a single primary care office in 2013 and has since grown to a system-wide division that serves patients across the greater Philadelphia region and beyond,” Sonny explains.

Most recently, Sandeep ‘Sonny’ Singh Bains has been focusing his efforts on the opioid crisis. “I lead a team of clinicians across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, offering evidence-based therapeutic education and resources to front-line primary care providers caring for patients,” he notes. “Our work was spotlighted by The Washington Post and the National Sikh Campaign.”
