Advanced Stair Systems in Harleysville creates solid hardwood American flags that look like they are waving in the breeze, writes William Sampson for Woodworking Network.

The company primarily makes stairs and handrails for custom projects in the Philadelphia region.

“We specialize in creating reproduction handrails using the Tangent Handrail Method and 3-D modeling, which is an art and science unto itself,” said owner Steve Guenzel.

Advanced Stair Systems took on the new challenge several years ago when Guenzel decided to create a hardwood flag that would be better than the ones he saw on the internet.

He has created many flags since then, but his most recent project is also the most impressive one with the flag being six feet long and two inches thick.

“This particular flag is a lot larger than most flags we made previously and is 39”× 72” and 2” thick,” he said.

“I had designed the waving profile a few years ago, and just had to modify a few things for the larger size.”

Their latest work will be displayed in the company’s new showroom.
