Daniel J. McGinley, a lifelong educator in the Philadelphia region, local union chief, and a devoted family man, died on November 16 at 88, writes Kristen A. Graham for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

McGinley started his career in education as a teacher in a pair of Philadelphia elementary schools. Later, he became a school principal and the leader of the labor union that represents principals.

“He saw education as the great equalizer,” said his daughter Nancy McGinley. “It transformed my family.”

Five of his eight children followed McGinley into teaching and three became district superintendents. His son Christopher served as superintendent in Cheltenham and Lower Merion and was a Philadelphia school board member until recently.

McGinley served as president of the Pennsylvania Congress of School Administrators until the early 1990s.

To this day, his work improves the lives of Philadelphia students and staff, wrote current union president Robin Cooper.

Hale and energetic, McGinley was in good shape his entire life, earning himself a bicycle from his family for his 80th birthday.

“He was doing all the kinds of things that 80-year-olds should not be doing,” Nancy McGinley said.
