Sales of vacation homes are booming as the pandemic leads more people to look for places where they can work or relax not far from their residences, writes Nicole Friedman for The Wall Street Journal.

According to a new Zillow analysis, online house shopping and pending sales in traditional vacation destinations are up compared to the country overall. In twenty of the nation’s metro areas with the highest share of vacation homes, page-views on Zillow for these dwellings were up in August by more than 50 percent over a year earlier. Meanwhile, nationwide page views increased 37 percent over the same month.

This trend goes hand in hand with the rise in interest for suburban homes that are a short distance from major cities. These two shifts are the best indicator of how the pandemic is reshaping the priorities of home shoppers, according to said Jeff Tucker, senior economist at Zillow.

“Home shoppers are particularly motivated to shop for a home in these markets because right now they have the freedom to probably work from home in many cases and even have their kids go to school from home,” he said.
