Unable to make it through the COVID-19 pandemic, barber John Troncelliti will be closing his 60-year-old barber shop in Wynnewood Shopping Center, writes Frank Fitzpatrick for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

After closing for 15 weeks at the onset of the pandemic and reopening in late June, Troncelliti will be closing the iconic barber shop, that’s serviced local celebrities such as Richie Ashburn and Walter Annenburg, at the end of Sept.

“It’s been such a great run,” said Troncelliti, “But I can’t see me being forced to shut down again. I pay a tidy sum for my 370 square feet and the rent never goes down.”

In 1910, Troncelliti’s grandfather opened a barber shop in South Philadelphia. Due to the outbreak of the Spanish Flu in 1918, during which his wife fell ill, Troncelliti’s grandfather was motivated to get out of the crowded city. As a result, he opened an Ardmore shop.

Trocelliti began barbering 1972 at his father’s shop in Ardmore, founded in 1960. Troncelliti’s father decided to open a new shop down the road in Wynnewood where Troncelliti began his career after he finished barber school and apprenticed at other shops in Malvern and Upper Darby.

For 48 years, he’s been cutting hair at John Troncelliti’s Barber Shop.

Even though Troncelliti is closing his shop, he hopes to continue barbering with a new business cutting customers’ hair in their own homes.
