Blue Bell teen Jessica Piccari often finds herself in tense disagreements with family members about racial injustice and other social issues, writes Christina Morales for The New York Times.

Tough conversations are being held between young people and older members of their family all across the United States. Jessica Piccari of Blue Bell, like many other teens, was shocked when one of her family members used a racial slur at a family gathering.

Despite calling her family members out on their racism, some of Piccari’s family members continue to exhibit racist behavior. “I get stern,” Piccari said. “Sometimes I get angry, sometimes I get upset because we shouldn’t have to be talking about this.”

Though Piccari and her mother Kathy agree on a lot of things about the Black Lives Matter movement, there are some things that Kathy and other members of Piccari’s family disapprove of, such as recent protests and the methods some protestors are using.

Because of how quickly information is able to spread, these disagreements often start on social media and turn into heated conversations.
