Cheltenham’s Dave Burd, who rose to fame as comic rapper Lil Dicky, has fictionalized his rise to success as a hip-hop star in the new FXX show “Dave,” writes Stuart Miller for The New York Times.

Burd, who was at the time an ad agency employee, became popular after he posted his first video for a song called “Ex-Boyfriend” on YouTube. Prior to that, he had worked on his music for eighteen months without sharing it with anybody.

His assumption was that he might get around 100,000 views within a year. Instead, the video was seen 1 million times within the first 24 hours.

“That was the best day of my life, because it showed I am who I thought I was,” said Burd.

Now a famous rapper, Burd decided to enter the television arena, something he had wanted to do for years. His new comedy premiers this week.

“Dave has a bucket of shameful, embarrassing, amazing stories,” said the show’s co-creator Jeff Schaffer. “Even if he was an accountant, his interactions with people would be worthy of a TV show.”
