Penn State Abington alumnus James Gavin met the love of his life while studying in Japan for a week during his spring 2018 semester, according to a staff report from the Penn State News.

Blair Che was a Seinan Gakuin University student who volunteered to welcome the Abington group at the airport in Japan. The pair hit it off immediately and they soon started dating.

They got engaged in December and while they have not yet set a date, they are planning to get married in the Philadelphia area. Che will move to the United States in March after she graduates.

Gavin, who graduated from Penn State with a degree in history, is an Army veteran serving in the Reserves. He is now enrolled in graduate school at the Institute of World Politics.

His trip to Japan was his third overseas trip with Abington. Prior to that, he had traveled twice to the United Kingdom.

“While those trips were amazing in their own right, nothing quite compares to my Japanese experience,” said Gavin. “We owe meeting each other to Penn State Abington.”
