Tech companies in California’ Silicon Valley are pursuing a long-elusive goal — the successful testing of passenger aircraft that fly themselves.

SkyRyse, a Silicon Valley startup, recently tested autonomous-flight hardware in a piloted helicopter, and Sikorsky and Xwing are developing similar technology. writes Cade Metz at bizjournals.com.

Government and industry have long worked to automate portions of passenger flight — “autopilot” is part of the American vernacular — and in some ways, building an autonomous aircraft is easier than building driverless cars, which have long been tested on public roads.

Dealing with the uncertainties of takeoff and landing, however, in addition to random events that can cause crashes in the middle of a flight, can be extremely difficult.
