Townhouses planned for former McKeever’s Tavern in North Wales

December could bring details, and perhaps action, on the future of one of the oldest buildings in North Wales.

Borough Manager Christine Hart reported on the latest developments on that project Tuesday, saying the borough’s planning commission will soon hear an update on the historic former hotel at 501 E. Walnut St., with council following soon after, writes Dan Sokil for The Reporter.

The historic former hotel at the corner of Walnut and Fifth Streets has been the topic of discussion for more than three years now, as the building was built in the 1890s as the Colonial Inn, then was called the North Wales Hotel for much of the 20th century, and most recently hosted McKeever’s Tavern until that family closed it in early 2014.

Over the course of 2014 and 2015, a new owner first proposed to tear down the hotel and build a new 40-unit apartment building on the site, designed to attract residents who would use the nearby North Wales SEPTA train station. After complaints from residents about the parking and traffic impact of that project, a revised plan was announced in June 2015 showing a complex of ten townhouses, two rows of five each.

The townhouse plans made it through the borough’s zoning hearing board in July 2015, but little had happened on those plans besides routine extensions, until recently, Hart told council: after the applicant did not appear at the commission’s October meeting, the applicant has now filed an updated version of the plans and asked for action as soon as possible.
