Sovereign Security led by MCCC Foundation board member Richard Cotton provides security guards for business and other institutions as well as background checks and drug screening services.

According to and a board member for the Montgomery County Community College Foundation, the best way to run a successful company is through a personalized approach to its management, writes Ayana Jones for The Philadelphia Tribune.

His security firm, headquartered in Center City, provides security guards for business and other institutions as well as background checks and drug screening services.

Cottom, who enjoys making impromptu visits to his employees, is trying to make his company stand out from other security firms with higher wages and better benefits for his workers.

The approach seems to be working, as the company has grown from its humble roots in 2004 to 260 employees. Its client portfolio has also blossomed, boasting names such as Philadelphia Gas Works, Philadelphia Housing Authority, Philadelphia Job Corps Center, as well as the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

“I try to run the company as a family-type business,” explained Cottom. “I try to go out to my accounts, talk to officers to let them know that I’m not just a name at the bottom of a check. I’m a real person and I do care about what going on in their lives and their families.”
