Two 11-year-old girls in Montgomery County have been instrumental in saving New Hanover Community Park’s hockey rink and now they will be a part of its rejuvenation, writes Jan Carabeo and Rory Hardenstine for CBS Philadelphia.

It all started in the fall when Lilly Walter and Natalie Van Druff heard that their beloved hockey rink could be turned into a pickleball court.

They quickly rallied community support to save the rink and now they are also helping with its renovation.

The recreation committee asked them for their ideas on how to improve the rink and on Wednesday they presented their plan to several township officials.

Walter and Van Druff have spent countless hours playing pick-up hockey at the rink and have lots of ideas on how to improve the hockey rink, including repaving the cracked surface and fixing the boards and doors.

“I’m excited to tell them what needs to be fixed so it’s safer for everyone,” Walter said. “That’s a big responsibility, and we want to try to make it the best we can. I think it feels really good to be asked to make it better.”

The next step for the girls is to present their plan to the full board of township supervisors.
