Lower Merion Board of Commissioners is moving forward with a plan that could add around a dozen new sites to the Historic Resources Inventory, writes Richard Ilgenfritz for Main Line Times.

The township’s Historic Commission compiled the list of possible additions earlier this month. It was then forwarded to the board’s Building and Planning Committee where it was approved last Tuesday.

This allowed township staff to start the process which could allow the properties to be upgraded to either Class 1 or 2. The first designation requires that Lower Merion obtain a Determination of Eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places through the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

However “a property with a DOE designation does not provide protection from demolition,” states a staff memo to the board. “These protections only occur if the Township adds the property to the HRI.”

Among the properties on the list are The Gerhard Building at Bryn Mawr and milestone markers along Lancaster, Montgomery and old Gulph Roads.

“I just want to strongly endorse what we are being asked to do,” said Gladwyne Commissioner Joshua Grimes. “In fact, I think it’s overdue.”
