Left: One of the murals being restored is this wall-size panel reflecting current events of 1972, completed by the graduating art class at Harcum College in 1973. Right: A mandala or a personal expression can be precise or like this free-form, created in response to finding peace and love over hate, during a turbulent year.

To celebrate the restoration of Harcum College’s historic mural collection, the school has launched a companion community arts project called “Murals Mosaic.” Any individual, regardless of age, can have a blank 10” x 10” canvas square will be mailed to them, free of charge.

Each square must reflect the theme: “This Moment in Time.” It refers to present-day events, reflects a contemporary topic (from politics to pop culture), and may incorporate any tone (from dramatic to humorous). Additionally, any medium will be accepted: oil, watercolor, charcoal, fabric, beads, yarn, mixed media, collage, decoupage, etc.

No formal artistic background is required to participate. Entrants need only make a commitment to return their completed square by the contest’s deadline, June 30.

There is a special contest component of this project just for high school seniors interested in enrolling as a full-time student in one of Harcum’s Art & Design majors for Fall 2021. These students submitting a completed square will be considered for a Harcum College scholarship. Awards are as follows:

  • First Place: $5,000
  • Second Place: $2,500
  • Third Place: $1,000
  • Honorable Mention(s): $500

Winners can apply their scholarship to any Art & Design major: Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising, Graphic Design, Interior Design, or Photography.

Receive a square by providing some brief information, including a current mailing address. All other materials or supplies needed to complete the square must be supplied by the artist.

At the discretion of contest judges, any square submitted may be selected to be displayed during the Murals Mosaic Gallery Show in Fall 2021. Contest judges are the Murals Mosaic Community Art Project Committee Members, including Harcum College’s Art & Design faculty.
