Business leaders offer thoughts on Bryce Harper’s worth as a big ticket item

In the realm of professional sports, it doesn’t get much bigger than this. A 13-year contract for $330 million — a record for Major League Baseball – and a city is ready to embrace Bryce Harper.

So, will the slugger earn that price tag? And is it a wise investments?  The contract features no opt-out clause but does grant him full no-trade protection. That means the Phillies are locked into Harper until he is 39, well past when most players begin to decline physically, writes Jeff Blumenthal in the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Harper comes to the Phillies with impressive credentials. He hit the major league when he was just 19 years old, and was named to the MLB All-Star team six of his seven seasons. He was named MVP while leading the Washington Nationals, a team that had struggled previously, to a playoffs on a consistent basis.

With those statistics, and the price tag, in mind, several Philadelphia business leaders were asked if they felt signing Harper made business sense.
