It was just another day on the job for Sgt. Mark Huzzard of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department. But for one family, one child, that day was life changing. And for that, municipal council honored the officer for his heroic efforts.

Sgt. Mark Huzzard, an 18-year veteran of the sheriff’s department, received a proclamation from council Vice President Derrick Perry for saving the life of a Norristown toddler.

After being dispatched to Noble and West Airy streets on May. 15 for a report of a child who was choking, Huzzard and his partner arrived at the scene to find a 1-year-old girl unresponsive and turning blue. Huzzard took the child from her mother and applied the Heimlich maneuver and several blows to the girl’s back to dislodge the obstruction in her throat and resuscitate her, writes Oscar Gamble in The Times Herald.

Huzzard was previously honored for his heroic actions at a special commendation ceremony presided over by Montgomery County Sheriff Sean Kilkenny on Oct. 4.

The Norristown Fire Department’s newest career firefighter was also sworn in at the meeting.

Michael Hunsicker took the oath, administered by Perry, as his wife and children looked on. A contingent of Norristown firefighters, led by Norristown Fire Chief Thomas O’Donnell, was on hand to congratulate him.
