Advisors Patrick Foley, CFP® and Kristin Hillsley (MBA), of Baird, set out to research factors that increase the odds of happiness in retirement.  The data they found suggests three key elements are of greatest importance.

You need to have enough money to support your lifestyle, whatever that lifestyle may be.  You need to take care of yourself and maintain physical and mental wellness.  And finally, you need to have a reason to get out of bed each day… a purpose in life, according to Patrick Foley.

Their findings are detailed in Winning at Retirement: A Guide to Health Wealth & Purpose in the Best Years of Your Life. This how-to guide provides step-by-step instructions on practical matters like investing, Social Security, and Medicare, but also takes a philosophical and inspirational look at the quest for happiness in the post-work years.

Recognizing that today’s retirees are tech savvy like no generation before them, Winning and its companion website, RetiredHappy.me, describes websites, software, and apps that can be helpful in all aspects of retirement life.  The book culminates with the crafting of a “Retirement Happiness Map”, using a modern technique called “mind mapping” to plan the various elements of a happy retirement.
