Appointed by the Secretary of Commerce, the board members evaluate the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, provide policy guidance and assess how the Baldrige Award serves the national interest, according to a press release.

“I am honored to be selected as a member of the Board of Overseers for this distinguished award from such an outstanding program,” Lynch said in the release. “The Baldrige Performance Excellence Framework has helped Main Line Health embed high-reliability practices across our system and improve performance and outcomes. This has helped influence our Performance Excellence initiative, which aims to create a high-reliability and high-performing organization focused on quality, safety, equitable care delivery and financial responsibility.”

In 2018, Main Line Health was chosen as one of three health care organizations in the tri-state region (southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware) to receive the Excellence Award from The Mid-Atlantic Alliance for Performance Excellence, which demonstrated the organization’s ability to align with the Baldrige Performance Excellence Framework.

The Baldrige Award was established by Congress in 1987 and is named after Malcolm Baldrige, the 26th Secretary of Commerce.

Awards may be given annually to organizations in each of six categories: manufacturing, service, small business, education, health care and nonprofit. The award promotes innovation and excellence in organizational performance, recognizes the achievements and results of U.S. organizations, and publicizes successful performance strategies, according to the release. Since 1988, 119 awards have been presented to 110 organizations (including eight repeat recipients).

The National Institute of Standards and Technology manages the Baldrige Award in close conjunction with the private sector, according to the release.
