A new program launched Wednesday by Amazon.com Inc. and Whole Foods Market will let shoppers stay in their car and have their grocery order carted out to their vehicle.

The Prime Now grocery pickup service starts Wednesday at a Whole Foods store in Sacramento, Calif. and in Virginia Beach, Va., though the company said it will roll out the service in other markets later this year, writes Mark Anderson at bizjournals.com.

Under the new program, Amazon Prime Now customers can choose their shopping items via a computer or a mobile app, and have the bagged groceries delivered to their car in the store’s parking lot an hour later.

“We feel the service is a very convenient option for customers in a hurry,”  said Tanvi Patel, head of business development for Prime Now. “Most parents don’t want to take their kids into the grocery store.”

This Amazon-Whole Foods service is an addition to delivery and other remote shopping that is emerging in the grocery business. In Philadelphia, local startup GoPuff is carving out its space by offering late night delivery of a variety of food and convenience store items, in addition to its GoBooze division that brings beer to a customer’s door.
