MCCC now offering national medical certifications

By

In an effort to help students and families who are facing financial challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic, MCCC has frozen tuition and fees for next academic year.

Graduates of  Montgomery County Community College’s (MCCC) Medical Assisting and Medical Office Assistant Certificate Programs now will have the opportunity to earn national certifications upon completion of these programs.

The National Healthcare Association (NHA) recently approved MCCC’s Medical Assisting and Medical Office Assistant Certificate Programs, allowing graduates the chance to take the national examinations to certify them as either a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) and/or a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA).

“Earning these national certifications shows healthcare employers that our graduates are knowledgeable and have the skills needed to be valuable employees,” said Kathy Schreiner, Director of Medical Office Professions at MCCC. “Employment continues to grow in the healthcare field, and these credentials will give our graduates an advantage when they apply for jobs.”

Acording to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of medical assistants/medical office assistants is projected to grow 29 percent from 2016 to 2026, which is faster than the average for all occupations.

Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, MCCC’s 34-credit Medical Assisting Certificate Program prepares students to work as a medical assistant in physicians’ offices, hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

MCCC’s 19-credit Medical Office Assistant Certificate Program can be completed in only nine months or on part-time basis, depending upon students’ schedules. The courses are offered in a flexible, stackable format, and credits may be applied to MCCC’s Associate in Applied Science degree in Health Services Management, if students decide to continue their education.
