Cirque du Soleil’s “Volta” production has Montgomery County’s economy doing somersaults.

The acrobatic show has yet to finish its run, but it’s already injected millions into the local economy, and it’s given the Montgomery County’s tourism agency more confidence in its ability to host and attract “world-class” events in the suburban county. Canadian company Cirque du Soleil this month set up and kicked off its “Volta” production in Oaks under the Big Top tent next the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center. The production will run through Aug. 19, two weeks longer than originally announced, writes Kenneth Hilario in the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Overall, a Cirque du Soleil Big Top show typically generates big business anywhere in the Unites States.  That big business converts into about $14 million to $20 million, according to analysis conducted by Cirque du Soleil.

And “the Cirque du Soleil ‘Volta’ show is different because it’s employing people for several months, while putting money into the local economy,” said Mike Bowman, president and CEO of the Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board. The Big Top takes up to six days to set up and two days to tear down, and the handmade canvases require up to 12 weeks for 14 artisans to make.
