A new Aldi grocery store will open in Pottstown later this week — bringing new life to a former grocery space that has been vacant for nearly five years.

Aldi will open Thursday morning at the Pottstown Center Shopping Center, 223 Shoemaker Road. The store is the first in Pottstown, but the third in the Pottstown area, writes Donna Rovins in the Pottstown Mercury.

“We’re committed to providing Pottstown residents with a simply smarter shopping experience,” Bob Grammer, Center Valley Division vice president for Aldi said in a press release. “When it comes to groceries, we listen to what our customers are looking for and deliver exactly what they need, at prices they love.”

The Pottstown store is among 750 new Aldi locations the company plans to open by 2022 — as part of a $3.4 billion investment. The supermarket chain currently operates 1,750 stores, and plans to expand that number to 2,500 stores nationwide by the end of 2022.

Another new Aldi, located at 5 Matthews Road in Malvern, is scheduled to open in the fall. Over the past several weeks, hiring events have been held to find staff for the Pottstown, Malvern and several other tri-county area Aldi stores that are already in operation.

In addition to the physical expansion, the company plans to add 25,000 new jobs in stores, warehouses and offices nationwide by 2022.
