Tech Talk: Best Buy launches tech support subscription service

Best Buy Co. Inc. has created a tech support subscription service. The company is betting that the growing complexity of smart homes and connected devices will create demand for support beyond the one-off repair job. (Photo courtesy of flickr.com.)
Best Buy Co. Inc. is rolling out a subscription service for its tech support unit, called Total Tech Support.
The service, which runs $200 per year, provides unlimited phone, online and in-store help on basic tasks like setting up home networks, car-stereo installation and basic data-recovery tasks, writes mark Reilly at bizjournals.com.

The idea hasn’t been lost on Best Buy’s rivals. Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. has been building its own tech-service teams in several markets, and it is specifically courting Geek Squad agents as it’s hiring.
