Montgomery County recorder of deeds announces veterans’ discount identification events

By

Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds Jeanne Sorg today encouraged Montgomery County residents to sign up for FraudSleuth, a free monitoring program through her office that helps protects their properties from thieves and forgers.

Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds Jeanne Sorg has announced six Mobile Veterans’ Discount Identification events to be held throughout Montgomery County this spring.

“I am thrilled to be able to continue to take this program on the road to serve Montgomery County veterans,” Sorg said. Earlier in April, the Recorder of Deeds participated in three events including the Military Retirees Appreciation Day in Horsham, the Healthy Lifestyles Expo in Pottstown, and the International Spring Festival in Lansdale, according to a submitted press release.

The Veterans’ Discount ID Program has been in effect since 2012. Sorg explained that the program is successful due to positive partnerships with elected officials, veterans’ organizations and the community. Since the inception of the program, approximately 7600 veterans have recorded their DD-214 discharge papers and received a Veterans’ Discount identification card to use at over 500 participating merchants throughout Montgomery County. However, Sorg indicated that the discount card is not the only benefit of recording discharge papers with the Recorder of Deeds.

“The DD214 is one of the most important document a veteran holds,” Sorg said, “and recording it at my office allows veterans and their families instant access to it should the need arise. “

It can take anywhere from four to six weeks to request a DD-214 from the National Archives. By recording it at the Recorder of Deeds office in Norristown, or at a Mobile Veteran Discount Identification event in Montgomery County, veterans can safeguard their discharge papers. Veterans, their immediate family, and representatives from county or federal veterans’ affairs can access the document in a timely manner, which can be crucial when the time comes to obtain benefits from the Veterans’ Administration.

Veterans need to bring their DD214 (military discharge) and a photo identification (such as a driver’s license) to a mobile event to record their paperwork, and in minutes they will receive an identification card.
