Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson helped to ensure the franchise’s first Super Bowl championship by leveraging quarterback Nick Foles’ strengths, instead of focusing on the things he needed to improve, writes Scott Mautz for Inc. magazine.

Prior to his stellar performances en route to and in the Super Bowl, Foles has had a tough few years. Disappointing seasons with the St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs, as well as stress from his wife’s medical issues, made him nearly quit football.

Instead, he decided to return to the Eagles as a backup to Carson Wentz. After replacing Wentz, who suffered a season-ending injury, Foles stepped in.

“Nick Foles is not Carson Wentz,” an ESPN writer said at the time. “And the Eagles adjusted.”

Pederson tailored the offense to Foles’s strength, short passes. He also took advantage of Foles’s ability to read defenses by including more run-pass options.
