How do Salty Footprints Get on the Third Floor??

Last week I walked through buildings that had salty footprints on the floor in the entrance areas and even on the second and third floors! I felt like an inspector who was following a suspicious trail as I traced footprints at the entrance of a building to the elevator… where the footprints stopped… and then started again when I arrived on the second and third floors.

When there is snow and salt on the streets – our shoes become a culprit for migrating salt! It gets all over the place!

…and it doesn’t help that the snow becomes slushy – the moisture practically glues the salt to the floors and carpets on the inside of buildings

…and don’t even get me started on heated sidewalks!

Those elevators may need some extra protection with an elevator mat – or at least protect the floors throughout your building with walk-off mats.

Facility managers try to prevent the migration of salt by putting mats at the entrances – but those water hog mats just don’t work. The dirt, salt, and moisture sits on the surface and continues to be a menace by adhering to all of the foot traffic; including that of every person that walks over the mats.

  1. A mat needs to be absorbent in order to stop all that moisture at the door.
  2. A mat needs to be a functional walkway safety solution – that is size appropriate for the area.
  3. Mats need to be properly maintained.

If you are just vacuuming your floor mats – you probably already know that you are not really cleaning them. They remain filthy and you can’t seem to get them completely clean – and your footprint nightmare just continues.

Sadly, many properties get stuck with messy floors and liability issues because of the condition of their walkway safety – there is a better way to manage floor safety…and I would love to talk with you about it!
