The Uconn Huskies defeated the Oklahoma Sooners, 88-64, in the Basketball Hall of Fame’s Holiday Showcase, last week. The win marked Geno Auriemma’s 1,000th win as a head coach in Division 1 NCAA Women’s Basketball.

Following the final buzzer, Uconn, Oklahoma, The Basketball Hall of Fame, Mohegan Sun and the sell-out crowd, all celebrated the incredible milestone in a coaching career that has also spanned 30 years and has accounted for 11 NCAA Tournament titles, and 7 Naismith College Coach of the Year Awards, according to the Mohegan Sun.

A special cake from Mohegan Sun’s pastry team was delivered by Mohegan Sun at half-court, as a video montage commemorating the moment played and confetti flew. It was an incredible moment for one of the greatest coaches in history.

In speaking to the crowd, Geno Auriemma talked about his teams, fans, his family and his coaching staff, showing clear admiration for each.

“What we’ve been able to figure out is that, if you try really hard every day to being really really good at what you do, and you try to the best for the people that are around you.. you keep your fingers crossed, and good things happen.”  Later adding, “we’ve poured our heart and soul into this, and we’ve gotten more back than we ever deserved, thank you very much.”
