Merck has a major presence in Montgomery County, where manufacturing and research are the major focus areas. None of those areas will be impacted by the move.

Merck & Co. Inc. is planning to eliminate 1,800 exiting sales positions and create 960 new chronic care sales force jobs as part of a major restructuring, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The action will not have an impact on Merck’s campus in West Point, Pa., where the company has more than 9,000 employees — about 3,000 of whom work in research and another 3,000 in manufacturing. Merck (NYSE: MRK), based in Kenilworth, N.J., has a total of about 68,000 employees.

None of the jobs being eliminated, which involve employees who are field based and spread throughout the country, are being moved outside of the United States.

“Merck is moving to a new sales team structure to better support changes in our business in the United States,” said Merck spokeswoman Claire Gillespie. “While we are eliminating certain sales teams, we are adding a new sales force in chronic care. This is part of ongoing prioritization efforts and the ebb and flow of our business means that at the same time we’re eliminating certain U.S. jobs, we’re also adding new U.S. jobs in growth areas.… These changes are part of ongoing company-wide efforts to sharpen Merck’s focus on innovative R&D that addresses significant unmet medical needs and on our best opportunities for growth, while reducing overall costs.”
