Lower Merion high considers later start time

By

A survey of southeastern Pennsylvania school districts shows Lower Merion with the highest average salary in the region. Pottstown ranks near the bottom. (MONTCO.today file photo.)

Delayed start times for students could lead to problems for the district sooner than later.

School officials are continuing to look more deeply into the issue and have released a report on their findings, writes Rich Ilgenfritz for mainlinemedianews.com.

At a Curriculum Committee meeting Monday morning, Kristina Ayers Paul, special assistant for program evaluation for the school district, reviewed the report with members of the Board of School Directors and about 30 to 40 members of the community. Paul looked at the experiences of some of the other districts that have recently changed their schools’ start times, the story continues.

Paul said in Greenwich, Conn. they just implemented a later start time this year and found unexpected issues that have cropped up such as more students taking buses that have required the district to purchase more buses and a longer commute time on buses for some students because of new traffic patterns.

Currently, the high school start time in Lower Merion is 7:30 a.m. Middle schools start at 8:15 a.m. with elementary schools beginning at 9 a.m.

According to Ayers Paul, nationwide high school students start on average at about 8:03 a.m.

With the discussions still going on and no decisions having been made, the next step for the district will be to reach out the public.
