While coaching usually comes after a successful playing career, Tucker Durkin is bucking the norm by balancing coaching at Bryn Athyn College with playing lacrosse for the Major League team, Florida Launch, writes Matt Leon for CBS Philly.

Durkin is about to start his third season as coach for men’s Division III lacrosse team at Bryn Athyn College after completing the 2017 season playing for Florida Launch. As a defender, Durkin helped the team reach the playoffs for the first time and was named MLL’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Durkin started playing lacrosse at Wyndmoor’s La Salle College High School before joining lacrosse powerhouse Johns Hopkins University, He was the third overall pick in the 2013 MLL Draft.

“If you asked me five years ago, was I going to be a college coach, the answer probably would’ve been no,” said Durkin in an interview with CBS Philly. But he has found playing and coaching really complement each other.

“I analyze the game more as a player. I actually think coaching at Bryn Athyn College has helped me become a better professional lacrosse player.”
