Montgomery County entrepreneur and Citizen’s Climate Lobby volunteer, Jay Butera, has been hard at work trying to galvanize Members of Congress on climate protection, writes Susan Phillips for State Impact.

At first, Butera had no issue getting Democrats to join his bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus. But finding the first Republican turned into a three year long grind. Now the Caucus has grown to 42 members.

“There were times when it felt like this is not going to happen,” said Butera. “This is impossible, this is the most polarized issue in congress.”

But through his unwavering persistence and polite friendly approach, he has managed to make significant headway over the last decade.

This week, he joined thousands of activists in Washington as they visited over 500 congressional offices to try and get representatives to act on this critical issue.

“I see this wall coming down now,” said Butera. “Since the beginning of this year 14 Republicans have joined the Climate Solutions Caucus. That’s a startling fact. That gives me a lot of hope.”
